Private Walk Istanbul Tour - About Topkapi Palace
The Topkapi Palace is the biggest and one of the most popular sites to visit in Istanbul. It was built in between 1466 and 1478 by the sultan Mehmet II on top of a hill in a small peninsula, dominating the Golden Horn to the north, the Sea of Marmara to the south, and the Bosphorus strait to the north east, with great views of the Asian side as well. The palace was the political center of the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries, until they built Dolmabahce Palace by the waterside.
Did you know that fact about Grand Bazaar?
Istanbuls Grand Bazaar, or Kapali Carsi, dates to 1455 and was established shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Over the centuries it has grown into a warren of 61 streets lined by more than 3,000 shops and currently occupies a nearly incomprehensible 333,000 square feet. You will never possibly be able to explore it all, but that doesnt keep people from trying — according to Travel + Leisure, the Grand Bazaar was the worlds 1 attraction in 2014, drawing over 91 million people.
The first church was constructed by Emperor Konstantios (337-361) in 360. The first church was covered with a wooden roof and expanded vertically (basilica) yet was burned down after the public riot that took place in 404 as a result of the disagreements between Emperor Arkadios (395-408) wife empress Eudoksia and Istanbuls patriarch Ioannes Chrysostomos, who was exiled. The patriarchâs mosaic portrait can still be viewed at the tymphanon wall located in the northern part of the church. No remains have been recovered from the first church however, the bricks found in the museum storage branded Megale Ekklesia are predicted to belong to the first construction.
