Pergamum Tour

We offer an alternative tour for the ones who have been to Ephesus before. Pergamum is a very important ancient city whit very attractive relics. We will welcome you at Izmir Port. We will drive to Pergamon ancient city. You will see Pergamons library on the Acropolis. The ancient Library of Pergamum is the second best in the ancient Greek civilization. When the Ptolemies stopped exporting papyrus, partly because of competitors and partly because of shortages, the Pergamenes invented a new substance to use in codices, called pergaminus or pergamena parchment after the city.

This was made of fine calfskin, a predecessor of vellum. The library at Pergamom was believed to contain 200,000 volumes, which Mark Antony later gave to Cleopatra as a wedding present. Three kilometers south of the Acropolis, down in the valley, there was the Sanctuary of Asclepius (also known as the Asclepieion), the god of healing. In this place people with health problems could bathe in the water of the sacred spring, and in the patients dreams Asclepius would appear in a vision to tell them how to cure their illness.

Archeology has found lots of gifts and dedications that people would make afterwards, such as small terracotta body parts, no doubt representing what had been healed. After the tour you will have a traditional lunch and drive back to Izmir Port or Kusadasi.

The tour ends at 19:00 and you will be transferred back to your hotel in Izmir, Kusadasi or Bodrum.

Did you know that fact about Pergamum?

What was Jesus message to the church in Pergamum in Revelation?. Revelation 2:12-17 continues with the third of seven messages to the churches of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) during the apostle Johns time. Each of these messages includes a specific word to a specific church, but there are also lessons applicable to the lives of believers today. This third letter is to the believers in Pergamum or Pergamos, which was a beautiful and art filled city in the province of Asia built along two tributaries of the Caicus River. Pergamum was a center for the worship of Dionysus, Zeus, and other pagan gods.

First, Jesus affirms the churchs positive actions: I know where you live where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city where Satan lives (Revelation 2:13). The Pergamene believers lived in a difficult place, surrounded by pagan influences, yet they held fast to Christs name and did not deny Him during difficult times.

Did you know that fact about Pergamum ?
The modern visitor approaches the site from the steep and winding road that leads from the modern Turkish city of Bergama just a few miles away. Upon reaching the ruins, the commanding panoramic view from Pergamon’s 1,000-foot-high perch makes it easy to understand how this city once dominated the entire region. It was a proud city in its time, and it had reason to be so.

Its monuments and building were constructed of high-quality white marble in the finest Hellenistic style, and its library rivaled that of the famed library of Alexandria in Egypt. In the mid-second century A.D., it became known throughout the Mediterranean world as a center of ancient medicine, largely due to the presence of the eminent Roman physician Galen (c. 129–200 A.D.), who was born in ancient Pergamon.
